The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund notes, with great sadness, the passing on May 14 of John G. Hines, originally from Boston, who was the longtime General Manager of Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio and close advisor to Jack Nicklaus.
Mr. Hines was greatly responsible for arranging for the appearance of Jack and Barbara Nicklaus as co-honorees of the 2007 Ouimet Banquet, which drew a then-record 2,100 attendees. The Banquet created an endowed scholarship in the name of Ellen Hines, John’s late wife, who was also a very close friend of Mr. and Mrs. Nicklaus. “John was a great friend of the Ouimet Fund, and enormously respected in the golf world. He will be sorely missed,” said Bob Donovan, Ouimet fund Executive Director.
Mr. Hines worked with over 40 PGA TOUR, LPGA TOUR, and USGA events along with a PGA of America event where he was Director of the 1987 Ryder Cup Matches at Muirfield Village Golf Club. Aside from being a leader of the Muirfield family, he was on the Board of Directors for The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute Foundation, and the Children’s Healthcare Charity.
Jack Nicklaus released a statement on Wednesday, May 15 saying, “John and I traveled the world together, and he was liked or loved everywhere he went. He had such an engaging way about him that he endeared himself to almost every person he met. We will miss his thick Boston accent –‘Pahk the cah.’ We will miss all the fun times we had; the jokes we traded; and all the wonderful moments we shared. I will miss him. Barbara will miss him. We all will.”
