The Ouimet Fund is saddened by the news that Roger Barry, long-time golf editor of the Patriot Ledger Newspapers and a great friend to the Ouimet Fund, passed away recently after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for several years.
Mr. Barry was one of the most respected golf writers in the country and a tremendous promoter of the game locally. He was one of the founders of the Golf Writers Association of America and a multi-term President and started several golf tournaments, including the Southeast Amateur Championship in 1960. His friends established a Ouimet endowed scholarship in his name 20 years ago from the proceeds of a testimonial dinner when he retired. The award is for a Ouimet Scholar studying Communications and Mr. Barry was always proud to learn of the annual scholarship recipient.
Among the tremendous tributes that have poured in about Mr. Barry, former Sports Illustrated Editor/Publisher Mark Mulvoy stated, “He had a great love of the game that seeped from every word he wrote.” The family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Ouimet Fund c/o the Roger Barry Scholarship.
