The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund joins the rest of the New England golf community in mourning the passing of long-time Boston Herald Golf Editor Joe Gordon.
Prior to joining the Herald, he served at the Patriot Ledger in Quincy. He totaled 40 years in covering baseball, hockey and golf and was a board member of the Baseball, Hockey and Golf Writers Associations.
“Joe was a very popular and talented member of the golf community. He was a frequent attendee at Ouimet events, including our Banquet and the old Duxbury Eight Club event. He wrote often about The Fund and was a great friend to us. He will be greatly missed, but fondly remembered. Mr. Gordon was the last of a generation of wonderful golf writers that included Roger Barry at the Ledger and Joe Concannon at the Globe,” said Ouimet Executive Director Bob Donovan.
Mr. Gordon is survived by his wife, Elaine (Garber); a son, Martin K. of Santa Monica, Calif.; a daughter, Karen Gordon Quintal of Plainville; a sister, Barbara Coleman of Johnston, R.I.; and two grandchildren, Jackson and Leah.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, Canton. Burial will be in Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon. Arrangements by Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, Canton. Memorial observance will be at the home of Karen and Doug Quintal through Thursday evening.
