The Ouimet Fund is remembering J. Louis Newell who passed away on March 2.
Mr. Newell had been a lifelong member of The Country Club and the club’s official historian for many years. He served on the committees of numerous major championships that had been played at TCC. He had also been a key liaison to the Fred Anders Alumni Tournament Committee whose annual event funds the Anders Endowed Scholarship for Ouimet Scholars at TCC. The Anders Committee created the Newell-Pyle-Sears Award in honor of Mr. Newell, and the late Charlie Pyle and John Sears in 2013. Mr. Newell also worked closely with Mark Frost on historical details as Mr. Frost researched his book, The Greatest Game Ever Played which was made into a movie of the same title.
“Louis was a great friend to the Ouimet Fund and the TCC caddies and Anders Fund. He was also so very helpful to Mark Frost in developing The Greatest Game Ever Played book. His dad, Dr. J. Louis Newell, had been a close friend of Francis Ouimet. Louis was a dedicated keeper of historical artifacts, and very involved in the development of TCC’s superb golf history book. He was also involved in many other activities, including Harvard athletics and golf. He was a wonderful person who will be deeply missed,” said Ouimet Executive Director Bob Donovan.
A Celebration of his life will be held on Friday, March 20 at 2:00 PM at the First Parish Church, 382 Walnut Street in Brookline.
