The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund proudly announced Bob Travers as the 2013 Denny Goodrich Honorary Ouimet Alumnus Award recipient at the Ouimet Fund’s Annual Meeting on Monday, October 21,2013.  Mr. Travers, a PGA Assistant Golf Professional at The Ridge Club in Sandwich, has been a tremendous champion for The Fund and for young people in golf for many years. During his time working in the golf shops of Newton Commonwealth, Dedham Country & Polo Club and The Ridge Club, Bob has fundraised and played in 10 Ouimet Golf Marathons.

Bob has been instrumental the last few years with the revival of the strong caddie program on Cape Cod at The Ridge Club.  His passion for caddies and his commitment to the youngsters that he brings along through the program is contagious.  Along with key club members and Ouimet Chair, Frank Trapasso, they have fostered an enthusiastic culture among the membership, caddies, and caddie parents. It was obvious when Ouimet representatives attended their special member/caddie social events this past year and witnessed the positive energy.

“Bob has been a tremendous asset to his clubs, his employees, and certainly to the Ouimet Fund,“ said Terry Kennedy, Ouimet Fund President. “He has promoted the benefits of working in golf, the scholarship opportunities that come with it, and has invested much of his time and energy over the years in support of our fundraising efforts. We are thrilled to honor Bob with this special award.”

This Award also has special meaning for Bob, personally, as he volunteered under the direction of Denny Goodrich while at Dedham Country & Polo when Denny was Ouimet Chair at the Club. The “Honorary Alumnus” designation seeks to acknowledge that there are many people who have been important to the Ouimet Fund and/or the game that either did not need assistance or did not apply for assistance when they went to college.

The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund renamed its “Honorary Alumnus Award” after Denny Goodrich when he retired from the Ouimet Fund’s Board of Directors in 2009 after 37 years of service. Mr. Goodrich, of Dedham Country & Polo Club, was the inaugural winner of the award in 2003 and also a winner of the Ouimet Fund’s Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award in its debut year of 2000.  For 13 years he served as the Vice Chair of the Ouimet Fund’s Annual Banquet, and he was also Ouimet President from 1990-1992. “Denny is the epitome of a Ouimet alum, and this is a very small way to always remember all he has done for the Fund. His contributions have been immense,” said then Ouimet Fund President Richard J. Barrett when the award was renamed in his honor in 2009.
