NEPGA Pro-Am at Bay Club
Concludes Ouimet Society Season

Charles River Kick offOn Monday, October 3, the Francis Ouimet Society enjoyed a day at one of the state’s best new courses.  The Bay Club at Mattapoisett welcomed 115 of the Ouimet Fund’s biggest supporters, which included NEPGA club pros for the 13th year in a Pro-Am format.

Charles River Kick offThose in attendance arrived to a beautiful clear morning and were treated to lunch before golf. Once on the golf course, the scenery was perfect and the Pro-Am format led to some competitive action.  The field was comprised of Fund supporters, Ouimet Directors and Ouimet Society members, and one NEPGA club pro in each group.  The pros represented supporting clubs and many have been players or fundraisers in past Ouimet Golf Marathons.  The day itself proved valuable as well in raising money for scholarships and spreading the mission of The Fund.

A great example of where those funds raised are going is Nathaniel Eskinazi, a Ouimet Scholar, who attends the University of Rhode Island and completed his service to golf at Blue Hill Country Club.  Nathaniel spoke to the crowd during the post-golf reception about how The Fund’s financial assistance expanded his college options and the lessened burden has allowed him to pursue increased extracurricular involvement.  The crowd took to heart his testimonial and Nathaniel is a great representative of the many Ouimet Scholars these events support.

Those in attendance were playing for prizes in the MacMillan Trophy Pro-Am division, and the pros were competing individually in their own competition.  Taking home the Donald MacMillan Trophy for team low net were David Leland (Winchester CC), Allyn Woodward (Brae Burn CC), Dick McCarthy (Brae Burn CC) and their pro teammate Dan Venezio (Myopia Hunt Club).  A terrific round of 66 meant low gross honors for the Boston Golf Club team of Tim Burke, Chris Wade, Rob Aldrich, Scott Adams, and pro Boomer Erick.  There was a tie for first place in the Pro division, with Sean Mulligan of Highland Country Club and Boomer Erick of Boston Golf Club taking top honors.

A special thanks goes out to Bay Club Head Professional Greg Yeomans, Assistant Professional Tracy Djerf, and General Manager Craig Fleming for help in arranging what was a truly memorable event.

2011 Ouimet Society Season
Begins at Essex

On Monday, June 6, The Francis Ouimet Society enjoyed a day at one of the country's most historic courses. The Essex County Club, host to the 2010 Curtis Cup, welcomed 88 of the Ouimet Fund's biggest supporters on a picture perfect day on the North Shore.

Those in attendance arrived in the late morning and were treated to a buffet lunch before golf. Once on the golf course, the scenery was perfect and the golf was competitive. While golf is one of the common denominators for the Ouimet Society, the real connection is a passion for giving back to the game and to those students who work in golf to make everyone's experience enjoyable. The field was comprised of Fund supporters, Ouimet Directors, and Ouimet Society members, all coming together to share a day and raise money for scholarships.

A great example of where those funds raised are going is Pat Sullivan, a Ouimet Alum, who attended the University of Colorado and completed his service to golf working at Essex. Pat spoke to the crowd during the post-golf reception about how The Fund increased the options available to him while going through the college selection process and helped him through school in the years following. Pat is about to embark on a career in mental health counseling beginning with a Masters program this year. The crowd took to heart his testimonial and Pat is a great representative of the many Ouimet Scholars these events support.

Those in attendance were playing for prizes in two divisions, the Ellison Trophy Division for the foursome pairings, and the Scheft Trophy Division for Husband and Wife/Mixed Teams. In the Scheft Trophy Division, John & Julie Blassick from Franklin CC took home the Low Gross prize. Playing together for the first time, Florence Flynn (Wianno) and Hal Bosworth (Cohasset) took home the Low Net title. Both of these teams will have their names engraved on the Scheft Trophy.

In the Ellison Trophy Division, low scores were abundant, but two teams stood out from the pack to take home the hardware. Phil Lussier, Tom Reilly, and Rich Monaghan of Boston Golf Club teamed up with Mike Cooney of Hatherly to shoot a terrific 1-under 69. On the Net side, Dan Brennan, Don Bedard, Tim Brennan, and Jim Antonellis teamed up to fire a 15-under 55 Net.

A special thanks goes out to Head Professionals at Essex Tom & Jean Waters, GM Bryant Lemire, the Ouimet Chair at Essex Tobey Coffin, and past Director and longtime supporter Jim Deveney for help in arranging what was a memorable event.

The Ouimet Society will be hosting its NEPGA ProAm on Monday, October 3rd at the Bay Club at Mattapoisett. Room is still available, and if you would like to play please contact Rory McGuire at 774.430.9094 or rorym@ouimet.org

2011 Ouimet Society Outing Sites Announced

The Francis Ouimet Society, a membership group within the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund, recently announced its 2011 outing lineup.  Continuing the recent trend of top notch courses (Eastward Ho!, Myopia Hunt, Winchester, Brae Burn, The Golf Club of Cape Cod, Kittansett and Pocasset over the past three years), the Ouimet Society will be visiting two outstanding courses which represent the best of classic old and classic new design.

On Monday, June 6th the Ouimet Society will visit Essex County Club, site of the 2010 Curtis Cup which was captained by Noreen Friel Mohler and starred phenom Alexis Thompson.  Essex has also hosted seven Massachusetts Amateur Championships, most recently in 2005, along with numerous other amateur championships.  Essex is consistently ranked in the top 100 classic courses in the United States, and the layout is an original Donald Ross which hosts the oldest existing green complex in the U.S.

The format will be a General Play One Best-Ball of Four, as well as a Husband and Wife/Mixed team competition.  We anticipate a full field for this event, so sign up soon!

In the second and final outing of the year, the Ouimet Society will travel to the Bay Club at Mattapoisett on Monday, October 3rd.  The Bay Club is one of the best new courses in the state, and mixes a classic New England feel with a modern design done by Brad Faxon.  It should be a treat for all in attendance!

This event will be our 13th Annual NEPGA ProAm, and is consistently a sell out, no matter what course it is held at, so be sure to sign up early!

If you would like to register for these events, please print out the Ouimet Society Brochure and mail it in with your payments.  As always, it is $175 for an Annual Membership, and $175 per outing.
