Roger Barry, Golf Writer and
Friend of The Fund

Igoe Memorial Tournament

The Ouimet Fund is saddened by the news that Roger Barry, long-time golf editor of the Patriot Ledger Newspapers and a great friend to the Ouimet Fund, passed away recently after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for several years. Mr. Barry was one of the most respected golf writers in the country and a tremendous promoter of the game locally. He was one of the founders of the Golf Writers Association of America and a multi-term Presidentand started several golf tournaments, including the Southeast Amateur Championship in 1960. His friends established a Ouimet endowed scholarship in his name 20 years ago from the proceeds of a testimonial dinner when he retired. The award is for a Ouimet Scholar studying Communications and Mr. Barry was always proud to learn of the annual scholarship recipient. Among the tremendous tributes that have poured in about Mr. Barry, former Sports Illustrated Editor/Publisher Mark Mulvoy stated, "he had a great love of the game that seeped from every word he wrote." The family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Ouimet Fund c/o the Roger Barry Scholarship.

Presented with the Ouimet Chair of the Year award was Steve Goodwin of Woodland Golf Club. Mr. Goodwin has been the Ouimet Chair at Woodland for five years, and been a tremendous advocate for The Fund. Prior to joining Woodland, he played in/fundraised for the first Ouimet Marathon in 1993 and several times after that. Since joining and becoming Ouimet Chair at Woodland, he has overseen a Ouimet support program that has been one of the best in the state.

In addition to a strong Bag Tag program, Woodland, with assistant pro Tom Doherty playing and Goodwin fundraising, has also consistently been one of the top Marathon teams. A high tech executive, he has also helped the Ouimet Fund with various technology solutions over the years and has been a strong supporter of caddie programs. He was a Ouimet Director from 2007 to 2009. "Steve has always been a great friend of the Ouimet Fund and we are proud to honor him. Steve has been untiring in his support of The Fund at Woodland, which has such a great relationship with us. He does it all," said Dick Reilly, Ouimet Fund President. In addition, the Denny Goodrich Honorary Alumnus Award was presented as is custom at the Annual Meeting. This year's recipient was Walter Lankau.

Mr. Lankau joined the Ouimet Board of Directors in 1992 and immediately suggested the concept of the Ouimet Fund holding a golf marathon at his club. In the subsequent years, he has played in, fundraised for, and lent his support as the Board's Marathon Chair. In 19 years, the Marathon has raised over $4 Million, and been the leading golf marathon in the US. Mr. Lankau has been a fixture on the Ouimet Board, chaired its Club Relations and other committees, and served as Fund President from 1998-2000. He and his wife Collette are Ouimet Society Lifetime Members. He is a former local and national President of the Golf Course Owners Association, is a highly respected MGA Official, and has long advocated for Ouimet support in the public golf course arena. "Walt's dedication to Ouimet has been so great that most people already assume he is a Ouimet Alumnus. This recognition truly captures his Ouimet spirit and his giving back to the game. With next year being the 20th year of the Marathon, this begins the year-long celebration by honoring the man who started and has been the driving force behind the Ouimet Marathon," said Dick Reilly, Ouimet Fund President.

Scholar Jetta Garrity spoke at the Annual Meeting on the impact of the Fund on her college career. She is pictured with John MacKinnon.

A Ouimet Society Lifetime membership was presented to John "Bucky" MacKinnon, the President of Performance Training, the coordinator of Dale Carnegie Training in the region. Mr. MacKinnon, a longtime Ouimet Society member from Charles River, developed in 2003 a program by which he donated free admission (value $1,500+) to the legendary courses to current Ouimet Scholars. Each year, graduates of the course report that it was one of the most beneficial they have ever taken – covering leadership skills, public speaking, and organizational techniques.

This year, following increased demand, Mr. MacKinnon stepped in and offered two full sessions of the Dale Carnegie program for Ouimet Scholars. In total, 37 Scholars completed the 2011 course which ran for eight consecutive Monday nights. Honoring him with a Ouimet Society Lifetime membership helps ensure that the strong friendship between him and The Fund will continue to thrive for years to come.

9th Annual Investing in Lifetimes Reception Brings Together Scholars and Supporters

Investing in Lifetimes Reception

On Wednesday, June 15, current Scholars were joined by Endowed Scholarship donors, Ouimet Directors, and other friends of The Fund at the 9th Annual Investing in Lifetimes Endowed Scholarship Reception. The reception was held at Wellesley Country Club, and a strong turnout produced a memorable evening!

The night began with a reception offering the chance for many of the creators of Endowed Scholarships to connect with the current student recipients. This is always a highlight of the Ouimet year as our supporters catch up with the direct beneficiaries of their support, hearing of the students’ accomplishments and future plans.

Investing in Lifetimes ReceptionA speaking program followed, punctuated by Jetta Rose Garrity and Michael Giansanti, two current Scholars and Endowed Scholarship recipients. Both Jetta and Michael touched on the opportunities provided by the Fund, as well as the pursuit of unique passions which would not have been possible without the financial support of the Ouimet Scholarship. In addition, Jetta and Michael are both graduates of the Dale Carnegie program for Ouimet Scholars. Fund President Dick Reilly touched on the growth of Endowed awards in the past year, as well as the overall strength of the Endowed Scholarship program. The creation of two new Endowed scholarships so far in 2011 was also announced – the Fordie Pitts, Jr. and John Reilly awards.
