The Lopez Scholarship was created after the 2004 Annual Banquet at the request of the honoree, Nancy Lopez, who was his daughter. Mr. Lopez taught her the game of golf when she was eight years old in her hometown of Roswell, NM as part of a therapy program for his wife, Marina, who was suffering from a lung disorder. Domingo Lopez was Nancy’s coach and teacher through her junior career. Sadly, Marina Lopez died just before Nancy won as a rookie on the LPGA Tour, but Domingo Lopez was with her for several of her early victories, which she dedicated to her family. He died in 2002 at the age of 87.
The Domingo Lopez Scholarship winner for 2009-2010 is Meghan Harrington of Hyde Park, MA. Meghan performed her service to golf at Franklin Park Golf Course where she worked in the Pro Shop for three years. Meghan was involved with the very successful Franklin Park Caddie Scholars program, as well as volunteering at a local school and teaching dance. She is a freshman at Suffolk University.
