Ouimet Society Kicks off 2010 Season at Kittansett
On Monday, June 7, The Francis Ouimet Society enjoyed a day at one of the country’s nicest courses. The Kittansett Club, host to the 1953 Walker Cup, and annually ranked in the top 60 courses in the country, played host to 128 of the Ouimet Fund’s biggest supporters on a picture perfect day on Buzzard’s Bay.

Those in attendance arrived in the late morning and were treated to a buffet lunch before golf. Once on the golf course, the scenery was perfect and the golf was competitive. While golf is one of the common denominators for the Ouimet Society, the real connection is a passion for giving back to the game and to those students who work in golf to make everyone’s experience enjoyable. The field was comprised of banquet sponsors, Ouimet Directors, Ouimet Society members, and friends of The Fund, all coming together to share a day and raise money for scholarships.
A great example of where those funds raised are going is Sarah Sullivan, a Ouimet Scholar who is a Senior at the University of Rhode Island and is entering her seventh year working at Kittansett. Sarah spoke to the crowd during the post-golf reception about how The Fund has helped her through school and how she hopes to give back after graduation. Sarah worked as a caddie and is now working in the golf shop this summer. She is majoring in Business at URI and hopes to get a master’s degree and become a CPA. She is involved in many volunteer organizations at URI, including Relay for Life, and is a great representative of the many Ouimet Scholars these events support.
Those in attendance were playing for prizes in two divisions, the Ellison Trophy Division for the foursome pairings, and the Scheft Trophy Division for Husband and Wife/Mixed Teams. In the Scheft Trophy Division, Pam Allen from Charter Oak and Richard McCarthy from Brae Burn combined to best the field with a 66 Net. Continuing their strong play from last year were Peter Kuchinsky and Harri Rosenberg from Charter Oak, with a 77 Gross. Both of these teams will have their names engraved on the Scheft Trophy.

In the Ellison Trophy Division, low scores were abundant, but two teams stood out from the pack to take home the hardware. Rich Barrett, Dave Sullivan and Bill Scannell, all from Charles River, paired with Rob Lawrence from Boston Golf Club to shoot a blistering 68 Gross. On the Net side, Joe Miller of Long Meadow, Alex Wayman of Brae Burn, Mark Durishan and Jeff Hamilton teamed up to fire a 16-Under 53 Net.
A special thanks goes out to Ouimet Alum, Past President, Trustee, and Director Dick Connolly, for his help in arranging the club, and to Kittansett for hosting a fantastic day.
The Ouimet Society will be hosting its NEPGA ProAm on Monday, October 18th at Pocasset Golf Club, one of Cape Cod’s nicest venues. Room is still available, and if you would like to play please contact Dave McAdams at 774.430.9094 or davem@ouimet.org
