2010 Ouimet Memorial Tournament
Sites Announced

2010 Ouimet Memorial Tournament Sites Announced The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund has announced the schedule for the 2010 Ouimet Memorial Tournament presented by Richard F. Connolly, Jr. This year’s event will be played at The International’s two courses, The Pines and The Oaks in Bolton, MA, and will conclude at Woodland Golf Club in West Newton, which is the traditional final round site. The dates of the 54-Hole Individual Stroke Play Invitational will be Wednesday, July 28th to Friday, July 30th.

This year will mark the first time since 2003 that the Ouimet Memorial Tournament has been to The International. The Pines and Oaks are two gems located in central Massachusetts, and should provide equal tests to the players.

The Pines is the older of the two, and is the first original Geoffrey Cornish design, built with the input of Francis Ouimet. It has since been redesigned by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and holds the distinction of the worlds longest golf course at over 8,400 yards.

The Oaks was built in 2001 by Tom Fazio and has received national acclaim. Stretching to almost 7,000 yards, the Oaks is a championship golf course that will challenge the best amateurs from New England.

The final round of the Ouimet Memorial is traditionally played at Woodland Golf Club. Woodland was Francis Ouimet’s home course, and was home to two other US Amateur Champions, Jesse Guilford and Ted Bishop. Woodland has had three of the most recognizable golf architects work on its grounds, with Wayne Stiles, Donald Ross and Geoffrey Cornish all contributing to the current layout. It is a great test and makes for an exciting final round.

While the Ouimet Memorial has only been around for 43 years, its list of past champions is impressive to say the least. Names like Bill Mallon (1972), Brad Faxon (1980), Fran Quinn (1987), John Salamone (1993), R.D. Haskell (1995), Jim Salinetti (1999), Frank Vana (1998, 2001, 2002, 2006), Jim Renner (2003, 2005), and Matt Parziale (2009) have all had the privilege of having their names engraved on the Ouimet Memorial Tournament Trophy.

The Richard F. Connolly, Sr. trophy is one of the most original in all of golf. The trophy was inspired by the Silver Club display at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland. The Putter in the center belonged to Francis Ouimet. In the historic 1913 US Open, Ouimet’s opponents use the flanking clubs. All were gifts to the Ouimet Fund by Dr. Gary Wiren. On the left is Harry Vardon’s brassie and on the right is Ted Ray’s Mills putter. The silver balls are inscribed with the year and name of each champion. The champion is also presented with a silver ball, display stand and a photographic reproduction of the trophy with dates, courses and his daily scores.

Richard F. Connolly, Jr., a Ouimet Alumnus, served as The Fund’s President from 1981-1984 and has been Chairman of the Ouimet Memorial since 1979. Francis Ouimet’s close friend Gene Sarazen served as Honorary Chairman from 1968-1999, and Arnold Palmer has served as Honorary Chairman since.
