The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s Alumni Committee has announced it awarded its Sixth Annual “Honorary Alumnus Award” to Jim Gaquin, long time Cape Cod Open Tournament Director. The special designation honors individuals who have given outstanding service in support of the Ouimet Fund or golf, but were not Ouimet Scholars when they were in school. The award was announced and a plaque presented at The Fund’s 60th Annual Meeting at Charles River Country Club on October 27.
“This is a very special award for us because Jim Gaquin has made tremendous contributions to the game and been a tremendous supporter of the Ouimet Fund in many ways.” said Rich Barrett, Ouimet Fund President. “The Alumni Committee worked very hard in developing this special designation in hope that this will provide incentive for others and increase visibility for the alumni. Jim and his wife Lois have been great Ouimet supporters. He has been Tournament Director of the Cape Cod Open which benefits our Guy Tedesco Scholarship for Cape Cod Scholars, has been a long-time interviewer of our scholarship applicants, and been a great spokesperson for us,” Barrett concluded. Mr. and Mrs. Gaquin were also the Tournament Directors of the Cape Cod Pro-Am League for many years, and, prior to coming to Cape Cod, worked in tournament management for US Opens and PGA Championships. They make their home in West Yarmouth, and he is a member of Cummaquid Golf Club.
The “Honorary Alumnus” designation seeks to acknowledge that there are many people who have been important to the Ouimet Fund and/or the game that either did not need assistance or did not apply for assistance when they went to college. Each year the Alumni Committee conducts a nominating process with the Ouimet Directors, Trustees and Alumni Committee including requesting basic information and a paragraph or so on the merits of the individual being nominated. The “service to golf” or great involvement with the game could be as a volunteer, as their career, or possibly as a competitor. The candidate must have been generous in their support of the Ouimet Fund, either by contributing financially or by volunteer or exceptional professional service.
