October 20, 2008
Season Closes at Myopia
The Francis Ouimet Society held its final outing of the 2008 season at historical Myopia Hunt Club, host to 4 US Open Championships over a 10 year period in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. 125 Players gathered at the Herbert Leeds masterpiece, which included 25 New England PGA Golf Professionals who competed in their own Individual Professional competition, as well as with their 4 Ouimet Society members in the Pro-Am Competition.

A special day of history
The players were greeted on this spectacular day by Head Golf Professional Bill Safrin, who gave a brief yet thorough history lesson about the course and its origins. Continuing with the history theme, it was only fitting that on the 10th Anniversary year of the NEPGA Pro-Am, that it was the 100th Anniversary of the last time Myopia hosted a US Open in 1908. This was a fitting segue into the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s 60th Anniversary, which will be 2009. On hand to commemorate this occasion and to lead out the groups at the shotgun start was Bud Campbell, a member of the inaugural class of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund in 1949, and a Myopia Hunt employee. The players were treated to a spectacular day on the links style course, and a reception following golf with food aplenty and a short speaking program. Former Myopia employee and Ouimet Fund Alumnus Matt Diamond spoke briefly about how The Fund has helped him achieve his dreams of attending college and working in public service. A picture with Matt Diamond, Bud Campbell, and current Ouimet Society President Todd Wetzel gives an example of the Ouimet Fund from 3 different generations, all working to give back to golf.
